J.F. Taylor Delivers MH-60 Cockpits to CAE USA

November 2007

CAE USA recently accepted delivery of the cockpits and associated hardware for two MH-60 flight simulators from J.F. Taylor, Inc. of Lexington Park, Maryland.

CAE USA is under multiple contracts for eleven* H-60 flight simulators from the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWC TSD) in Orlando.  J.F. Taylor, Inc. is under subcontract to CAE to design and fabricate the cockpits and hardware deliverables for each of the devices.  The two hardware suites CAE recently accepted bring the number J.F. Taylor has delivered to four.  Three more are currently under contract and the options for the final three simulators are expected to be exercised in 2008-2009.

MH-60R TOFT #4

J.F. Taylor completed delivery of the “Romeo #4” cockpits and hardware in October, 2007.  This Tactics Operational Flight Trainer (TOFT) device consists of an Operational Flight Trainer (OFT), a Weapons Tactics Trainer (WTT), a Tactics Instructor Station (TIS), and associated hardware including 29 power trays, 7 input/output distribution panels, 22 equipment racks, and nearly 1,000 cable assemblies.  The three devices are networked and capable of operating independently or concurrently in a single scenario to provide total aircrew mission training.

J.F. Taylor’s workshare included designing and fabricating the cockpit shells, internal components and on-board and off-board racks with trays and wiring; the ambient lighting and secondary control systems for the throttle, engine controls, rotor brake, and parking brake; integration of the SCT electric control loading for the primary controls; the avionics interfaces; implementing the Block 2 upgrade; and redesigning the radar DVI interface.

CAE is scheduled to deliver the MH-60R TOFT #4 simulation system to the U.S. Navy at NAS Jacksonville, FL in December, 2008.

MH-60S OFT #6

J.F. Taylor completed delivery of the “Sierra #6” hardware, an Operational Flight Trainer (OFT), to CAE USA in October, 2007, after fabricating/populating the cockpit and integrating it to CAE’s motion base platform.

The OFT #6 cockpit is based on the design baseline for the OFT #4 & 5 cockpits and includes all Block upgrades.  In addition to fabricating and integrating/populating the cockpit, J.F. Taylor also redesigned, fabricated, and installed the Input / Output (IO) wiring to integrate directly to the VMIC disconnect panel; performed finite element analysis to verify the cockpit structure met the motion and vibration specifications; and provided documentation.

CAE USA is scheduled to deliver the MH-60S OFT #6 to the U.S. Navy at NAS Norfolk, VA in November, 2008.

The CAE USA / J.F. Taylor team provides a number of significant benefits for the Fleet under these multiple contracts.  The contractors’ extensive and previous experience with the MH-60 platform reduces risk.  J.F. Taylor’s engineers integrate a planned maintenance system into the design, maximize commonality with the other TOFT devices, and use COTS-based hardware and software to reduce overall life cycle costs for the Government.
