Lexington Park, MD—The U.S. Coast Guard has contracted with J.F. Taylor, Inc. to design, build, test, and deliver an MH-65D Operational Flight Trainer (OFT).  The OFT will be installed at the USCG Aviation Training Center in Mobile, AL, and delivery is scheduled for July 2011, with the trainer ready for training in October 2011.

“This will be our second flight trainer for the Coast Guard,” says Mark Taylor, Program Manager.  “The MH-60T Cockpit Procedures Trainer (CPT) we delivered in 2007 was well received, and in fact, was awarded the Captain Niels P. Thomsen Innovation Award by the Coast Guard in 2008.  We developed an outstanding working relationship with the USCG during the development of the CPT, and look forward to meeting their training needs with the new MH-65D OFT.”

The OFT will include a high fidelity, fully operational cockpit with 7-axis electric control loading and be installed on a 6 degrees-of-freedom (DOF) vibration platform.  The trainer will have a collimated visual display system with a wide field of view (60 x 220), and be NVG compatible.  Also included will be new avionics; weather radar; instructor-operator, debrief, and software development stations; and a link to the aircrew weapons trainer.

The USCG flies over 100 H-65 helicopters, with more than 400 pilots who need to be trained annually.  At the moment, the USCG Aviation Training Center (ATC) has a single H-65 flight trainer.  This new trainer will help the USCG enhance their training capabilities and in the future, allow the trainers to be modified incrementally as the aircraft and equipment are upgraded.

Planned subcontractors to J.F. Taylor for this program include Aechelon, ASTi, Camber, Flight Safety International, Industrial Smoke & Mirrors, JRL Ventures, and Pagnotta Engineering.
